The drop in performance would often affect the frame-rate of Resident Evil 3, which could run at 60 fps on PC and PS4 Pro, but would often dip into the 50s and lower depending on the visuals. This effect was most notable during cutsenes, like the question raising after-credits scene, however the issues could appear at any time during gameplay as well, breaking that all-important immersion for Xbox One X players.

It would seem that one of the culprits for this issue, comes from the way that Resident Evil 3 used a few workarounds to deliver on the 4K gaming experience that players on the newer game consoles look for. Similar to how Resident Evil 2 used an upscaled 2330x1620 resolution to simulate 4K, the new remake used the same settings for the PS4 Pro, but attempted to up the base resolution for Xbox One X to 2160p, causing the performance drop. While there are many tools available to game developers, like rendering stunning visuals through ray-tracing, it is always difficult to know exactly how things like 4K upscaling will affect performance from system to system.

Fortunately, the Xbox One X is now running Resident Evil 3 in the simulated 4K with very little drops in frame-rate, matching the performance that appears on the PS4 Pro. Of course, this patch won’t be affecting the other systems in the Xbox One line, or either version of PS4, as those systems had already been running fine. With any luck, the lesson learned in Resident Evil 3 will continue in Resident Evil 8 and players won’t need a patch for the next entry in the franchise to hit the promised resolutions and frame-rates.

While the game may have had a rocky start on Xbox One X thanks to this attempt at hitting closer to native 4K, players have been fairly receptive to the latest remake. It certainly hasn’t gained the same type of following as the Resident Evil 2 Remake and there are plenty of players who have problems with Resident Evil 3, but its success is still encouraging for where Capcom is taking the series.

Resident Evil 3 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
