The Capcom showcase will focus on updates to already announced games. This includes the remake of Resident Evil 4, which the developer just confirmed it will feature during the live-streamed showcase on Monday.

This confirmation comes courtesy of the official Resident Evil 4 Twitter account. The tweet and accompanying teaser trailer didn’t offer much new information beyond the announcement itself. However, it seems like fans may be getting a relatively in-depth breakdown of the upcoming remake. Unfortunately, it’s unclear how much gameplay Capcom will be ready to show off during the event. Hopefully, the developers will have something substantial for Resident Evil 4 fans to check out.
Resident Evil 4 is notable for having a somewhat distant connection to the preceding games. It follows returning Resident Evil character Leon Kennedy on his mission to rescue the President’s daughter Ashley from an isolated village in rural Spain. He arrives to find the villagers infected by a grotesque parasite and ruled over by a dangerous cult called Los Iluminados. The plot of Resident Evil 4 only ties back to the series’ storyline in its final act, and the gameplay puts a heavier focus on action combat than survival horror.
Capcom announced that it was remaking RE4 during a PlayStation State of Play livestream on June 2nd. The Resident Evil 4 trailer showed how the new graphics enhance RE4’s creepy atmosphere. However, players shouldn’t expect an exact 1-to-1 translation. For example, the remake’s website says it will feature “modernized” gameplay and a “reimagined” storyline.
Interestingly, a few moments in the trailer give the impression that players may spend some portion of the Resident Evil 4 remake controlling Ashley. The most notable scene comes after the trailer’s 1:05 mark, where the camera settles behind her into a third-person perspective. This may just be an added flourish to liven up the trailer, but it looks very similar to how many third-person games signal the transition from cutscene to player control. If so, making Ashely playable might be a way to rehabilitate a character that many consider one of the most annoying NPCs in gaming.
However, that’s just an inference based on limited information, not something officially confirmed. Fortunately, fans don’t have too long to wait until the Capcom showcase, which starts at 6 PM EDT/3 PM PDT on the 13th. Hopefully, it will include plenty of new information about the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake.
The Resident Evil 4 remake releases for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on March 24th, 2023.
