Interestingly enough, there’s a reason behind why all of Resident Evil 7’s have such great sets of teeth, with series producer Masachika Kawata recently explaining the phenomenon in a snippet from an email interview with Kotaku. When asked about whether or not the supernatural Baker clan actually brushes and flosses daily, Kawata responded in kind with a brief breakdown of how the technology used to capture real models impacted the way characters’ teeth look.
For those wanting a little more expansion on the concept of photogrammetry, the process is used to detect exact, specific points from images so as to estimate and approximate these particular points within the context of a three-dimensional space. For example, it has also been used in other recently released games, such as DICE and Electronic Arts’ sci-fi first-person shooter, Star Wars Battlefront, so that players would be able to experience environments that appear to be hyper-realistic due to the high amount of details found within the scenery.
Of course, fans playing Resident Evil 7 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One surely get to see intense close-ups of Jack and Marguerite Baker’s chompers whenever they come face-to-face with the protagonist, Ethan Winters, but it’s a safe bet to make that those fans taking on the game with PlayStation VR have the best view imaginable. Speaking of Sony’s virtual reality headset, Capcom recently released some of its official “Global Stats” for Resident Evil 7, revealing that around 10% of fans are experiencing the title with PSVR.
Taking all this into consideration, while the pearly whites of Resident Evil 7’s characters are definitely gleaming to say the least, the fact that such pristine chompers exist in such a grim and gritty world makes them even more unsettling, as they bring a stark relief to the disgusting and decomposing environment surrounding them. One could even go on to argue that the characters’ polished and highly detailed teeth add another level of realism, which is one factor that contributed to lots of critics’ positive reviews of the game, as many proclaimed Resident Evil 7’s graphics to be frighteningly realistic.
Resident Evil 7 is out now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR, and Xbox One.
