Now, in an update that probably won’t come as a shock to most longtime Resident Evil fans, the asymmetric multiplayer mode housed within the main game of Resident Evil 3 has been confirmed not to be canon within the game’s universe. In a recent interview with Official PlayStation Magazine the game’s producer Peter Fabiano confirmed the mode is just “a fun online experience with connections to the RE Universe.”

Though the online multiplayer mode share’s many aspects and enemies with the mainline series games, the multiplayer mode is apparently just that: a multiplayer mode for fans. So while fans will likely see creepy enemy types return in Resistance, there probably won’t be much in the way of new, relevant plot information inside the mode.

For those who may be unaware, Resident Evil Resistance is an asymmetric multiplayer mode where four survivors attempt to survive the match while a separate player acting as the mastermind unleashes zombies and other horrors upon them. For example, the mastermind has the opportunity to deploy Mr. X from Resident Evil 2 Remake on the four survivors. It remains to be seen whether or not Resident Evil 3’s Nemesis will make an appearance in multiplayer.

Despite both Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil Resistance on the horizon, rumors are currently making the rounds regarding a possible Resident Evil 8. Some of the rumors about Resident Evil 8 currently circulating suggest the game will see new additions like enemy types, a return to the first person camera, and the return of Chris Redfield.

Regrettably, this recent interview does confirm something rather unfortunate: Martin Sandwich is not canon. Martin Sandwich is one of the six playable survivors within Resident Evil Resistance who, upon reveal, collectively took over the online gaming community. Like the other survivors, Martin has a specialty his character excels in. Interestingly, it has nothing to do with making sandwiches and more to do with making traps and engineering.

Resident Evil 3 launches on April 3 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
