Recently, a well known Apex Legends dataminer has seemingly discovered the existence of the Smart Pistol within the game files. Adding weapons from the popular Titanfall series isn’t a new prospect as Apex Legends already has plenty of guns from the previous games like the L-Star or R-99. As expected, this latest discovery was not well received by members of the community due to the weapon’s potential to break the current balance.

Originally added to Titanfall and then turned into a boost option in Titanfall 2, the Smart Pistol featured a short range auto-targeting system that was able to one shot AI bots and take out other players after three lock-ons. Developers believed the weapon was balanced due to the length of time needed to actually lock-on to the target. Naturally, its inclusion was intended to be more for newer players to stay competitive with more experienced players but it quickly became controversial due to how easy and effective it was to use.

For Apex Legends players worried that the gun is coming to the competitive experience, Design Director Jason McCord has seemingly ended the speculation. In response to a fan on Twitter, McCord confirmed that the Smart Pistol MK6 isn’t coming to Apex Legends while also making it clear that the misinformation was a bit irritating. While that should satisfy players, what isn’t clear is why the Smart Pistol files were inside of the game files anyway. Regardless, the dataminer’s tweets and account has since been suspended.

While the Smart Pistol may not be making its Apex Legends debut, the original King’s Canyon map did make its long awaited return last weekend for just a limited time. World’s Edge has been the featured over the past couple of seasons, leaving some fans wanting a return to the classic map. The limited-time event brought the season 1 map back, leaving out many of the overhauls and changes that happened during season 2. Thankfully, the map is due to return on March 24 as it takes the place of World’s Edge inside of the ranked mode.

Apex Legends is free-to-play on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
