Day 1: Teymuraz Gabashvili sets up second-round clash with Nishikori
Top seed Kei Nishikori, who has been given a first round bye will commence hostilities at the Barcelona Open against Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili, currently ranked 85th in the world. The Russian took out Carreno Busta of Spain in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the second round.
Nadal, meanwhile, will meet the winner of the match between Nicolas Almagro and Paolo Lorenzi. Nadal’s 41-match winning streak at Barcelona was halted last year by Almagro.
The results of the first day of Barcelona Open 2015 are displayed below:
Day 2: Nishikori off to a winning start
Defending champion and top-seed Kei Nishikori commenced his Barcelona Open campaign on a resounding note as he took out Teymuraz Gabashvili in straight sets. Other notable wins on the second day at Barcelona Open included Tommy Robredo’s facile win against Mikhail Kukushkin. Nicolas Almagro received a walkover against Paolo Lorenzi three games into the match, while Fernando Verdasco was upset by 17-year-old Andrey Rublev.

Day 3: Nadal cruises into third round; Cilic exits
While it was a day to remember for eight-time Barcelona Open champion Rafael Nadal, who avenged his quarter-final loss to Nicolas Almagro last year, with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win against his opponent, it was heartbreak for US Open champion Marin Cilic, who was shown the door by Victor Estrella Burgos.
2004 champion and ninth seed Tommy Robredo faced little trouble in his second round match against Mikhail Kukushkin, whom he defeated in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Robredo’s compatriot and third seed David Ferrer also booked his spot in the third round after overcoming a spirited Albert Montanes 6-2, 6-3.

Day 4: Nadal crashes out
In what was, inarguably the biggest upset of the tournament, Fabio Fognini of Italy brought eight-time champion Rafael Nadal to his knees. The Spaniard, after having cantered to an easy win against Almagro, was sent packing after he lost the third round match to Fognini in straight sets, 4-6, 6-7 (6).
Prior to Nadal’s exit from the tournament, top-seed Kei Nishikori saw Santiago Giraldo off in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. David Ferrer too had little trouble getting past Elias Ymer.
