Shigeru Miyamoto, however, revealed that Retro Studios actually requested the chance to develop another installment in the Donkey Kong Country franchise because it had plans to help evolve the platforming elements. During a special interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Miyamoto praised Retro for being able to take on several different genres and create quality games while doing so. He even stated that he feels the first-party developer could have more than one in-house project going at a time, which could allude to more announcements in the near future for fans.

Despite Tropical Freeze being a beautiful and entertaining platformer on the Wii U (see our preview), Miyamoto addressed disappointment from gamers who were hoping for a return to Samus Aran. The legendary game designer clarified that if and when Nintendo decides to revisit the franchise, Retro Studios will be a high priority team when it comes time to choose which studio will develop a new Metroid.

“In particular the company built up quite a lot of knowhow in that specific style of gameplay and as a consequence felt that it could leverage that again in creating something new in that same style for Wii U. I think Retro has really come to a point at which it’s possible for it to have multiple lines running at the same time and having different projects in development. I totally think there are possibilities to see different projects from Retro in the future.”

After Metroid: Other M failed to reach the critical and commercial success of the Prime trilogy, going back to what worked with the franchise makes sense. Since Retro Studios was responsible for the popular first-person shooter iterations of the sci-fi epic, it wouldn’t be at all surprising for the Big N to hand the reigns back over to the Texas-based studio. The power of the Wii U, albeit on par with current-gen, opens up the doors to even more possibilities for Retro and its future projects — provided Ninty takes a step back from Donkey Kong Country after the new game hits stores later this year.

In the meantime, what type of Metroid game would you like to see from Retro Studios on the Wii U, Ranters? Would you prefer a new take on the classic side-scrolling elements or a first-person shooter?
